Hi, I'm Dr. Sunny Smith

I wanted to be a doctor  because of seeing how the doctors  had a profound impact on my family’s life.   I wanted to help.

 

The first time I really experienced the challenges of the culture of medicine was during the first rotation of my third year in med school.   A cardiothoracic surgeon told me to drop out and become a secretary. Cue me crying in the call room for days. 

 

Although things got better fourth year,
my internship was the typical grueling schedule
of 80 hour weeks with 36 hours of no rest. 

 

When I started suffering from non-specific neurological symptoms and aphasia, the neurologist dismissed it as me being just another woman with vague complaints.

 

Eventually, those symptoms progressed and presented as status epilepticus, 
due to sleep deprivation, leaving me in a coma for a week...

 

 

 

When I finally woke up, my future was unclear. 
My physicians  didn't think I could finish residency due to likely anoxic brain injury.  

I ended up becoming a Full Time Professor, Director of multiple programs, and an awarded educator for Excellence in Teaching and Humanism in Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. 

 

I had the husband, the kid, the job, and had “arrived.”   
Yet I was overworked and overwhelmed, feeling like I was failing at work and failing at home because there was always too much to do and not enough time. 

 

Life changed forever when I broke both my arms on a trip to French Polynesia.

With my arms and face broken and unable to stand or care for myself,
for the first time ever, I had to simply be still. 

 

I discovered that life could be different.
Turns out that someone else
could do all those things
​I thought that I HAD to do myself.

 

At that time, other women physicians recommended a podcast to manage my thoughts around the accident.   Turned out maybe all this forced stillness might be happening for me.  

 

That started my quest to actually determine for myself what I wanted for my life on MY terms.

 

In addition to being a physician, I then became a Certified Coach for physicians and have built a multi-million dollar business by empowering women physicians to enjoy the lives they’ve worked so hard to create on their terms.

Dr. Kristin Neff

Dr. Neff is an Insight Meditation practitioner and an associate professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Harvard Business Review, among others, and her TEDx talk has been viewed over 1.7 million times. She’s also the co-developer of an empirically supported training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, which is taught by thousands of people worldwide, and the co-author of The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook as well as Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program: A Guide for Professionals. She is also co-founder of the nonprofit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion

The Henrietta Lacks Family

The Lacks family has enthralled audiences across the country by talking about their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Henrietta Lacks, and her transcendentally important contributions to science. The international success of Rebecca Skloot’s New York Times bestseller, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, has left people keenly interested in the Lacks family and Henrietta’s legacy.

Christine Moutier, MD

Dr. Christine Yu Moutier knows the impact of suicide firsthand. After losing colleagues to suicide, she dedicated herself to fighting this leading cause of death. As a leader in the field of suicide prevention, Dr. Moutier joined AFSP as Chief Medical Officer in 2013.
 

She has testified before the U.S. Congress and co-anchored CNN’s Emmy Award winning Finding Hope on suicide prevention.
 

Dr. Moutier has been a practicing psychiatrist, professor of psychiatry, and medical director of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla, treating diverse patient populations from Asian refugees to veterans to corporate and academic leaders. Dr. Moutier has authored numerous articles and book chapters for medical and general audiences.
